Foods to be avoided in active Ulcerative Colitis diet (Flare Up)

There are a number of foods, which are best avoided during a flare up of Ulcerative Colitis diet – or when Colitis is active (i.e. blood or mucous in the stools). These are mainly foods that include either high amount of insoluble fiber or very high amounts of dairy fats:

  • Cabbage/sprouts
  • Cauliflower
  • Broccoli
  • Sweet Corn
  • Mushrooms
  • High Bran fiber items – such as whole meal bread, and high fiber cereal
  • Tomatoes – especially the seeds
  • Soya Protein
  • Onions – Especially raw onions
  • Cheese/cream (tends to cause excess acid/irritation in the gut)

Nutrition is very important in Ulcerative colitis diet management to prevent malnutrition and extreme weight loss. The Ulcerative colitis diet may vary from person to person depending upon the stage of the disease, for which they may need to consult the doctors at Sushruta Ayurvedic Therapy Center.
